Calico is a 45-minute cruise up the highway, and features old mining-era buildings, ghost tours, a museum, and even its own railway. And if you still haven't got your history fix, take a look round the Apple Valley Legacy Museum. It's packed with artefacts and displays on local history, and best of all, it's even free. If you like it lively, you'll want to see what's going on at the nearby San Bernardino County Fairground, especially the big annual fair in May.

For those who can't get enough of scooting around in the sand, an Apple Valley vacation rental is the one for you. The town is big on dirt-biking, while if you like your powder white, the nearby San Bernardino mountains are a snow sports mecca. Come summer, those same mountains draw in the hikers, and you've got the added bonus of lake living and watersports up by tranquil Lake Arrowhead. And then there's the Mojave.
